Janhavi Subedarpage's Tale

VITeach... I wonder in disbelief of how quickly time has passed here, leaving behind a bunch of memories to treasure forever. Walking into a class at ADW for the first time I remember how helpless I felt, not knowing Tamil, teaching them without it was a tough nut to crack. Little did I know, that those innocent souls would in turn start teaching me Tamil. They made it a routine to teach me a new word every class and then they would go off into peals of laughter, when I said it wrong. Yet, I owe it to them for helping me with a new language.

Teaching was always a pleasure, however one of the most vivid memories was the day of Pongal Celebrations at school. It was as if I was immersed in a sea of children wearing colorful dresses playing and running around untroubled. All that we had planned for the day went in vain, because the little ones wanted no restrictions on that day. All they wanted was to be as free as birds. With much difficulty they agreed for the lemon and spoon race, most of them were happy running while some turned sad when their lemons dropped midway, some fought and complained, some fell down and cried while some cheered for their friends, .. Watching them was soothing to the heart, it made me lose track of everything.

I believe this is what I revere in VITeach. From teaching the kids to bonding with them, from being a sophisticated adult to becoming a child once again, from taking up responsibilities to forgetting all worries when with the kids, I learnt it all here…
