Amirthavarshinee's Tale

VITeach was one of the first few clubs I came across in VIT and I instantly knew I wanted to be a part of it. I joined the school team and in my third year was one of the school heads. I remember the first time going to school to teach and how special all of us VITeachers felt. The kids looked at us with absolute awe, and so did we, noticing how genuine their love towards us was. They were all so excited. Every time we visited the school, the kids would come running towards us just to have some kind of interaction. All the kids gave us so much love and attention that it made us all feel super special too.

VITeach has given me nothing but happy memories. During the initial visits to the school, I met a child named Varshini, and she was so excited to meet me because our names matched. Ever since that first interaction, she would come to meet me every time, without fail, just to ask, "Akka, unga per Amrithavarshinee dhaane? En per nyabagam iruka?" (Akka, your name is Amrithavarshinee, right? Do you remember my name?) I would smile and reply, "Yes, Varshini," and she would smile right back at me and start introducing her friends she brought with her. It was the sweetest thing ever.

I usually handled the 2nd graders, and I loved it. However, there were times when the children were very talkative, tired, cranky, or sometimes just sleepy because English wasn't interesting to them XD. So, we would play games to cheer them up and then continue teaching. This one time, it was very difficult to handle the kids. We had done everything from playing games to setting strict rules to help them concentrate. Eventually, I thought maybe I could sit down, and they could all sit around me while I taught them, hoping closer interaction might help. One of the girls came and sat right next to me, resting her elbow on my leg and leaning on her hand. I didn't mind and continued teaching. Two minutes into the lesson, the girl had fallen asleep on my lap XD. I couldn't help but laugh because my teaching had put a child to sleep. And then, of course, the whole class burst out laughing, and we continued playing games.

Joining VITeach was one of the best decisions I took in college. I joined the club to teach children and ended up learning so much from them. Being part of the club meant new experiences, new memories and new lessons every single time you visited the school. And I absolutely loved it.
