Sustainability goals for Governments Schools

These are some of the Sustainable Development Goals :

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve universal quality education
  • Ensure gender equality
  • Improve access to clean water and sanitation
  • Ensure good health and well-being of all

Key SDG Achievements:

  • More than 1 billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty (since 1990)
  • Child mortality dropped by more than half (since 1990)
  • The number of out of school children has dropped by more than half (since 1990)
  • HIV/AIDS infections fell by almost 40 percent (since 2000)

The following schemes were implemented in government schools to improvise education :

  • Free and Compulsory Education for Children aged 6 to 14
  • Ladli Yojana, Beti Padhao Beti Padhao
  • Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)
  • Scholarships for Economically and socially backward students.

  • MLL - Minimum level of learning.
  • National Achievement Survey (NAS) - started from 2021

Monitoring the SDG at a sub-national level:

  • NITI Aayog, in partnership with UN India, developed the SDG India Index Baseline Report and an accompanying Dashboard in December 2018.
  • This Index provides the first holistic strategy to measure progress on socio-economic and environmental parameters of development.

Dr. S. Sathiya Narayanan, one of the faculty co-ordinators of VITEACH discussed integrating Sustainability Goals (SDGs) into government schools in India. He provided an introduction to SDGs and their importance, followed by a detailed analysis of specific goals like poverty eradication, gender equality, and quality education. Initiatives undertaken by the Indian government to achieve these goals in schools were highlighted, including free education and sanitation programs. The discussion then shifted to ways to monitor progress and implement sustainable practices in schools, like organizing events and integrating sustainability into the curriculum.
